Two Beauty Fails

As a beauty product addict I try out a lot of different products, even if there is something in a particular category that has already stolen my heart as a "holy grail". One of these products is Duo lash glue, (which is 20% off right now here) and even though I am very loyal to good ol' Duo I decided to try something new during my last lash application. I was in Atlanta with Blair, and saw that she was using a new lash glue, the Andrea Modlash Brush-on Clear Adhesive.  I was in her room getting ready and thought, "Well, I might as well try this instead of having to run back up to my room to get my Duo glue!" So, onto my lash the glue went and onto my eye the lash went, the end.

Just kidding. Not the end. It was the beginning... of a fail product.

Stick with whatchu know, girl. This stuff was bad in every possible way for me. It stung, it crusted up at the corners of my eyes, and it was a b*tch to remove. There was nothing about this that I liked, except that it was clear from the beginning, whereas the duo is white and then dries clear (but I mean, seriously, that's not even a big deal). My eyes did not like this stuff, at all.

The other fail is also an eye product, in the form of eye makeup remover. I adore the CVS brand one that the Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover is supposedly a dupe for, so when I ran out of it and wasn't near a CVS (hello, Walgreens!) I thought this would be the closest to what I know and love. It's not.

The CVS knock-off is on a totally different level than this stuff. I do not like this. It doesn't work well and I don't like the texture. What confuses me most is that this is a double-layered product which you are supposed to shake, and yet it is oil-free. So what on earth is the oily substance? Someone please explain this to me - I am quite weirded out. Either way, I don't like the texture at all - it feels a bit rough and slimy at the same time, which is hard to explain but not nice to use.

I'll be using up the eye makeup remover but I won't be repurchasing it, but the eyelash glue... that's not going near my eyes again. My eyelids want to scream and run in the other direction when they see this glue based on how hard it was to remove my false lashes.

Oh, and to make everything even better, I used these in combination... so I was removing my falsies (applied with this lash glue) with this eye makeup remover. Yikes.

  2. I hated the makeup remover too! It barely removed anything, much less waterproof mascara as it claimed. I used it up and I've vowed to never repurchase again!

  6. AW I love that eye make up remover. But--I do just use it for after I use my Clinique Take the Day off balm and wash my face. Or I'll use it before if I have on super heavy eye makeup. Sorry you didn't like! :(

  10. I liked the eye makeup remover better than the walmart brand. However I bought the Clean & Clear eye makeup remover and I love that alot more then either the Nutrogena one or the Walmart brand.

  11. I disliked the Neutrogena one too! It felt so oily on my lids! :O I much prefer the CVS one :)

  12. I used that eye makeup remover, and was equally confused by the oily-ness of an "oil-free" product. Plus, I had a reaction to it, and my eye area was itching, burning, dry skin. Not fun.

  13. I like the Neutrogena make-up remover, but I only use it before bed - you definitely can't apply makeup on top of it!

  14. Sad to hear the lash glue stung your eye, i know how painful that is!

  15. Hi Elle I like the Neutrogena brand but just not the eye make-up remover.
I tried the Garnia 2 in 1 make up remover and even though it felt greasy/oily it removes waterproof make-up with ease.
Thanks for sharing this post with us :)

  19. I hate that eye makeup remover too! It doesn't remove my makeup at all it just makes my eyes feel covered in oil! it feels like it is repelling the mascara rather than breaking it down if that makes sense? Not a win for me at all!

  20. I hate that eye removers as well. I'm using it as an all over remover to use it up fast. I hate how oily it is. I'm going to buy the CVS one next. I understand about the roughness, because I use a cotton ball that isn't rough but somehow was tearing up my skin when I uzed this remover. I also think it is contributing to acne. I have flare ups every time I use it. Gross! :'(

  22. I didn't like that eye make up remover either. My FAVORITE is the pond's make up remover/cleanser. It gets everything off so easily, I'm never trying anything else again.

  23. Hey Elle,
I tried the eye makeup remover as well and didn't like it. However, it worked excellently to give my brushes a little clean! Maybe you can use up the rest that way? I just put a bit of it on a paper towel and swipe my brushes.

  24. I hated the Nuetrogena one as well. It felt heavy and oily and just clingy to my eyes. It was a fail for me as well. I did get a full-sized sample of the Estée Lauder eye makeup remover and I heart it so much! It isn't heavy, it literally melts the mascara off my lashes and doesn't make my eyes feel heavy and oily. I'm a duo girl as well, I've tried anything else. Good to know that I should just stick to what I know.

  30. Elle, you should try using cleanse off oils to remove your make up! :) They remove my eye make up so well! And I've read everywhere that it works well for oily skin too because apparently the oil clings onto oils on your skin to remove it :)

  33. I agree! That makeup remover is just terrible! It feels all slimy and gross. And yet it supposed to be oil free.. >.> for a drugstore remover, I usually go for Almay's. Great post!

  35. I love the Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover, but I HAVE always wondered why it separates if it's supposed to be oil free. Maybe the difference in why it works for some people and not others is the mascara you use? I use Maybelline Full and Soft.

    Great post as always, Elle!

  36. Yeah, the makeup remover is kind of uncomfortable... it has Cyclopentasiloxane, which is a silicone, not an oil. but still is not water soluble...

  37. I was just wondering myself what that oily stuff is if it's supposedly an "oil-free" makeup remover... I never really liked it, just used it to use it up... Oddly enough I watched one of your videos where you raved about the CVS brand and I was like "wow lemme get my hands on this" but (like yourself) I didn't have a CVS near me... I got the neutrogena one and I was NOT impressed... Barely took off my regular mascara let alone waterproof!! I will have to try the real CVS one though, glad I saw this post! Thanks Elle! :)

  43. I didn't like that eye remover either. It made my face feel so greasy, and it wasn't very effective!

  44. I used to hate that Neutrogena makeup remover as well. It's definitely still not my favorite, but here are some tips to get the most effective use out of it:

Put a good amount of product on a cotton pad - hold the pad over your eyelid for a few seconds - basically long enough to allow the product to penetrate the eye makeup. Then GENTLY swipe from side to side. I find that if I take this approach - the makeup just sort of slides off. If I am rough at ALL or try to rub too vigorously then no makeup comes off and I end up just hurting my eyelid! Definitely still leaves a greasy finish (what IS that?) but makes it tolerable until you use it up!

  48. The oily stuff is probably silicone based, this product has two in it cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane. Some silicones are, like oil, less dense than water. Love this post it's so well written and funny.

  49. I can't tell the difference between the neutrogena one and the cvs one. They both work totally fine for me... but I am also disturbed that it feels oily and yet is oil-free! How does that work?!?
