Holy Grails: Worth the Hype?

There are many products out there that are so hyped up in the beauty community that you can’t help but wonder if they are really that good. Today I want to start a little series called “Worth the Hype?” where I will give my opinion on whether these products are really as amazing as people make them out to be. Remember, this is just my opinion, and for a product to get to the “cult favorite” level, it has to work really well for the majority of people – so take my opinion with a grain of salt! That being said, I get asked for reviews of these products a lot, so without further ado:

Urban Decay Naked Palette (Both 1 and 2):

My Story: When the first Naked Palette came out I put my foot down and said “no”. I felt I didn’t need it, and knew that I had plenty of dupes in my rather large MAC collection, so I didn’t give in. When the Naked 2 Palette came out I said “no” to myself again out of annoyance… first there was Naked 1 that everyone “had to have” and now there was a second one? I held off for a long time, until one trip to Ulta, where the Naked 1 Palette really caught my eye for the first time. As I looked at the colors I realized that yes, this palette really was gorgeous. I felt that $50 was quite a lot to shell out on a palette when I had many of the colors already (if not all of them), but I justified it as being a great travel palette – it has every color I would need to create natural to dramatic looks. I bought it, and yes, I love it.

Do I recommend it? Yes.

Why or why not? Because it really is that good. That being said, I don’t think you need both of them. Pick one, the one that has the colors that attract you more (for me this was Naked 1), and go for that one. Both are gorgeous. Is it bad to have both? Definitely not! But don’t feel bad for only getting one – trust me, they create similar looks.

Worth the hype? Yes!

Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser:

My Story: The Philosophy Purity Made Simple cleanser is one that almost every beauty guru has tried and loved. I hear about this product everywhere as a great basic, and I’ve heard it is lovely paired with a Clarisonic (see review below). It’s a good “I don’t want to think about it; I just want something that works” cleanser. I picked up a small size of this recently in Florida after forgetting my cleanser at home, and was quite excited to give it a try. And… it’s good. It’s not great (in my opinion). It feels quite nice on my skin, and the scent is nice (not too overwhelming). Plus, it’s perfect for traveling – it’s no fuss and does the job, but I won’t be purchasing it in full size. I’m just too into my balm cleansers right now to give this product enough love.

Do I recommend it? Maybe.

Why or why not? It’s a good cleanser. There’s nothing I didn’t like. It’s good, but it’s not great.

Worth the hype? Yes and No. It’s good. It’s not “the best cleanser I’ve ever tried in my whole life, if I was on an island I would need this and only this with me”.

Clarisonic:

My Story: I got my first Clarisonic years and years ago, when I was still in college. I did a whole video about it called "A Toothbrush for your Face!?" in which I rave about it. My skin loved this, until it didn’t anymore, simple as that. It used to do great things for my skin, and helped clear it up, but now it breaks me out, so I don’t use it anymore. I’ve gotten emails from people who ask me why the Clarisonic doesn’t work for them, and my response is, “it won’t work for every single person. Listen to your skin. If it doesn’t work for you, don’t use it!”

Now, I do want to point out, I still adore my Clarisonic, I just don’t use it on my face. My little pink Clarisonic makes for the best body exfoliator, and I love using it with my shower gel. It makes me feel so super clean, and afterwards I love how soft my skin is. So if you have invested in one, and it’s not working for your face, and you are frustrated, try it on your body! The skin on your body is able to withstand more exfoliation, so even if your face is too sensitive your body probably won’t be.

Do I recommend it? Yes.

Why or why not? Even though I don’t use this on my face anymore I still use it daily, and used to love it on my face. It’s a good product, I think.

Worth the hype? Yes. Just don’t go into the purchase thinking that it 100% will work wonders for your face. It probably will – but just know that it doesn’t work for everyone!

MAC Makeup Brushes:

My Story: My very first “nice” makeup brush purchase was MAC. When I first got into watching and making YouTube videos MAC was the ONLY thing that the beauty gurus used. Because of that, I thought that they were “the best”, and I slowly invested in building up my collection. It’s been over 5 years, and they are still amazing and in perfect condition. The “oldest” MAC brush I have is 8 years old (a MAC 217 - it was the only eye makeup brush I had in college!) and you can’t even tell it’s older than my 5-year-old brushes.

Now, there are lots and lots of amazing brush companies, a few of which I have sprinkled into my “everyday brush collection” (Real Techniques, Sigma, Chanel), so MAC is definitely not the best-and-only-brush-company-ever, but it’s a good middle price-point line. You can find cheaper brushes (Real Techniques is really good, I find), and you can find much pricier brushes (Hakuhodo is one that I’m dying to try but they are SO expensive), but MAC is right in the middle.

Do I recommend them? Yes.

Why or why not? They last years and years and they create beautiful makeup. They are worth the money, in my opinion. You can build up your collection slowly, getting one brush at a time when you have the extra money, and they last ages as long as you take care of them. I wash mine with baby shampoo.

Worth the hype? Yes.

Beauty Blender Sponge:

My Story: The beauty blender is one of those products that people swear by with an eager, “if you have never tried this you have NO IDEA what foundation is SUPPOSED to look like!” I’m just more of a brush girl. I’ll admit, when I want my makeup to look perfect, there is nothing better than a damp beauty blender. But honestly, it’s too much work for me to wash this thing every time I use it. It’s much faster to spot clean a brush then to wash the beauty blender with soap in a sink every single day, and because of that I don’t tend to reach for it as much. I’ll admit though, if I had a collection of about 15 of these I would maybe use them more – I could just toss the dirty ones in a shoebox and do a nice deep clean of all of them every week or so… but since I just own one it is only used for the most meticulous of makeup applications.

Do I recommend it? Only if you like applying makeup with sponges, and don’t mind washing this with soap every time you use it. Would I recommend this over a foundation brush if you could only pick one? No.

Why or why not? As far as sponges go this is the best one I have tried. The original is better than the cheaper “knock-offs” that you can find in drugstores, and way, way, better than those little white triangle makeup sponges you can find in bulk packs in drugstores.

Worth the hype? Yes (but only if you like applying makeup with sponges).

If you guys have other “hyped up” products you want me to feature in my next “Worth the Hype” post, let me know in a comment! I want to make this a regular feature here on Dreaming in Blush

  2. Hey Elle, I really enjoyed this post because its nice to know if you should even bother to buy some of these nice products because they are so expensive. Now I know what to buy and what not to buy! I would really love if you did another 'worth the hype?' video but with drugstore beauty products! :)

  3. I agree with you on the Purity cleanser...it was just okay. It's exactly like the Cetaphil cleanser to me. I do love my Clarisonic Mia! It's not a miracle worker by any means, but my skin doesn't react well when I stop using it. I'm glad you're making posts like this a regular feature on your blog!

I recently tried the Eve Lom cleanser (I got a sample) and instant love!

Emily Noel also raved about Philosophy Purity to cleanse your brushes, so I've been using that and I love!

  6. I don't think the beauty blender is all that great :/ I have a lot of areas I need to cover which aren't that hard to cover. When I use the beauty blender it sheers out my foundation and concealer so nothing gets covered! I get it wet till it can't hold anymore then I squeeze it to get excess water out and I use it right away. Am I doing something wrong?

But I know that I would like to put some budget money once or twice a year towards more expensive, hyped up products. This is the perfect type of advice for me. Thank you thank you thank you!!! 23. I already own a Naked 2 palette and I feel that one day if I have the spare funds I might even purchase the original Naked palette. Just because they make a nice pair, but really I'd do it when I already have everything else and have nothing to spend my money on. As a makeup artist my collection is already bigger than some people's but I don't feel like I'm missing out by just having the Naked 2.

But I do want to try a beauty blender, just to see what the fuss is all about. I do think I might want to wash it every day as well, but at least I'd know wether I like it better than brushes or not.

  29. I was on the same boat as you with my Clarisonic brush, I used the deep pore cleansing brush I think? But it stopped working for me, started causing small breakouts, but once I switched my brush head to sensitive, even though I'm not sensitive skin, my Clarisonic was my face's buddy again!

  42. Great post!!!! I'm glad to hear how these products aren't for everyone. Some products I've tried because of the hype that didn't work for me were the benefit they're real mascara and Laura Mercier silk cream foundation - it broke me out like crazy... some that I love are the amazonian clay blushes, bioderma, and moroccanoil treatment(the one with the blue label) ... I'm still on the fence about the naked palette but just might get it based on your article.

I'd love to hear a review on the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, Urban Decay De Slick, and i'm very curious about the caudalie beauty elixir.

  46. I really enjoyed this post. There are so many products in the makeup world and its hard to know what really works so this was super helpful. Although I do not consider MAC a middle of the road price point, I do agree there are other brushes that work equally such as the Real Techniques and Sigma and they last just as long too! Personally I do not understand the beauty blender, I still prefer a brush any day. I have wanted to try the Philosophy facial cleanser for so long so picking up a travel size would be a good idea. Thanks, I cannot wait to see your next post like this!

Stuff I'm personally interested in (of course only if you have tried these):
    -Hourlass Candle/Dim/etc light finishing powders
-Mac Mineralize skinfinishes/blushes (especially blush colors)
    -Lorac Pro Palette
-any argan oil hair products which are hyped (like the Josie Maran ones)

  48. Thanks for the post! It was really informative, and I agree about the MAC brushes being an investment. I have some eco tools (meh, in my opinion) & tokidoki brushes (pretty nice), but since tokidoki doesn't have their makeup collection at sephora anymore, I decided to start buying MAC brushes. I love the quality & I know they'll last me ages!
I was considering buying the beauty blender, but I really like to apply foundation with my fingers actually. It's a lot quicker and my fingers don't leave brush strokes!

  50. I'm glad someone else doesn't use their Clarisonic for their face. I bought it originally to try to clear up my face a bit, because it worked for my friend. Well, it actually just broke me out a whole lot--not acne like, red blemishes, but I had small under the skin bumps. It was more like irritation. But I do use it on my body still and love it.

  58. Great post. I personally just shelled out for the beauty blender - and I love it - especially paired with MAC prep and prime fix plus spray. The other big hype was the banana powder by Ben Nye...any opinions? Mine should be arriving soon - but thought I'd try it out.
I absolutely love my Sigma brushes though- here in NZ MAC brushes are ridiculously expensive - so Sigma is the best alternative. Philosophy cleanser I also tried years ago - but then I didn't use it again - any recommendations for a great cleanser? Dermalogica is up there right now on my hit list along with Ultraceuticals :)

  78. Thanks for the post, it helped. I'm running low on my cleanser and was debating on the philosophy one but now I think I'll find another one instead. & I love my Naked 1 palette, I don't think I'd ever have the need to get the second one.. just not worth it in my opinion. Too similar :(

  79. thank you so much, this helps A LOT! <3 could you do a "worth the hype" post on MAC eyeshadows or marc jacobs perfums, because they're quite expensive too for students :)

  83. Thank you so much for this post, especially the part about the Clarisonic- it really HURT my face and silly me thought this was normal.

Using it as a body exfoliator is a great idea!!

  85. Love this post! I don't think I've given my beauty blender as much "play time" as my foundation brushes, so maybe I can't say this with complete certainty, but I am not ALL that impressed with it. I don't think it provides any more coverage than a flat top synthetic brush and it takes me longer to apply with the beauty blender. Maybe it's just me though! xo

  87. Great post, would love to see it as a regular feature!
About the Clarisonic, since you use it on your body (the regular brush head?), do you think it's not worth it to buy the Clarisonic PLUS which has a body brush head? I'm debating about which to purchase! Thanks!

  90. It continues to amaze me that people still think Hakuhodo brushes are so expensive. It depends on which ferrule and handle you choose. The basic line (black handles, silver ferrules) are the same price if not less than most of the similar mac ones. The difference in the lines is in the ferule and handle, not in the brush head itself. So take a look at the cheaper lines from Hakuhodo and skip MAC all together!

  91. The Clarisonic isn't really meant to exfoliate. It's job is to cleanse. You aren't supposed to scrub it onto your face. You move it gently from point to point so it vibrates the dirt and sebum out of your pores. Most people who can't use it on their face are using it too harshly, (Most people, not all cases. If you have super, super sensitive skin, then that's another story! :)). Also, some people who use it for the first time or use it only periodically find that it breaks them out. This is because it's getting so much out of your pores that your normal cleanser can't get. When all the extra dirt and oil rises to the surface, it can cause you to break out. Once you make it past the purging stage and use your Clarisonic continuously, it shouldn't cause breakouts any more. I've had mine for years and love it.

    Love your blog, Elle! :)
