A micelle is a tiny oil molecule that is suspended in soft water. Instead of smearing your makeup around your face like water would, these little molecules basically eat up and absorb dirt and makeup like little pac-man. The actual solution looks and feels just like water, and is super soft and gentle on your skin. Micellar water was, until recently, sold almost exclusively in France, but is now available from lots of brands. They have been all the rage in the beauty world for awhile, and for good reason.
The most popular micellar solution is Bioderma, but it is not available outside of France (except for a few retailers). Luckily for us, many brands now carry versions of micellar water so we can all get our hands on some. As bioderma was the "cult favorite" I knew that was the one I wanted to try first, so I ordered a few bottles on amazon. If you're curious, the exact seller I ordered from was this one.
The Bioderma Sensibio H2O micelle solution is a face and eye makeup remover for sensitive, normal to dry skins. It is meant to remove even water-resistant makeup. It also has soothing and decongesting active ingredients to prevent the feelings of irritation often caused by cleansing. The reason that I fell in love with this is because it is so easy to use; you literally just pour some on a cotton pad, swipe it around your face and eyes, and that's it. You don't have to rinse it, you just dab your skin dry with a clean cloth and you're done. When I ordered this I was under the impression that this was a one-stop shop: makeup removing and cleansing all in one step. And it is... but I wouldn't exactly say that this should completely replace soap and water. On a night where you are exhausted or have been drinking and it's either this or sleeping in your makeup? Then yes, definitely this is a life-saver. Backstage at a fashion show and you have to quickly cleanse your skin for a new look? Bioderma to the rescue. YouTube beauty gurus will find this fantastic to remove swatches or makeup quickly while filming a look... the possibilities for use are endless. It's definitely a good idea to have one of these in your collection.
These days I'm still a major Bioderma fan. I use this as my first-step of my double cleanse facial routine. I use it only at night, before anything else, to remove my makeup and start the cleansing process. It works beautifully to remove my eye makeup, and never makes my eyes burn. The only negative thing I can say about this is that it tastes a little bad if you get it on your lips (or use it to remove a bright lipstick), and it also tends to break me out if I use this exclusively for a few days in a row. I ordered 4 big bottles of this months ago from Amazon, and still have 2 unopened, and am very happy with it.
There are tons of these waters out there, and there are definitely a few on my "to-try" list, but the only other one I've tried is the this works 5-in-1 clean skin water. Fleur from Fleur De Force sent me a bottle of this to try, and as I had never tried anything from this brand I was quite excited. This one is meant to be brightening, and gently cleanses, balances, refreshes, and removes all traces of makeup. Rosewater and fruit-packed botanical waters help shed skin cells and boost elasticity. There's also olive and almond oils to cleanse and mint to cool and tone. My first impression was that this stuff was so much better than Bioderma; it felt just a bit nicer on my skin. It doesn't have the funny taste that Bioderma has, and it didn't break me out when I used it exclusively for a few nights as a test. I would say that this products only downfall, for me at least, is that I can't use it on my eyes. It doesn't remove mascara well and it stings my sensitive eyes a tiny bit (it's not unbearable but definitely noticeable).
Bioderma is about $29.29 for 500ml, and this works is $34.65 for 200ml, so bioderma is definitely the better deal money-wise. And after using both for awhile, even though this works is a lovely product, I think bioderma is the better choice overall. Although I will admit, on nights where I really want to pamper my skin, and don't mind spending the extra time removing my eye makeup separately I tend to pick this works. It has more luxurious packaging, with a pump to dispense the product, and feels a bit more nourishing on my skin. Both products are lovely.
Have you tried any other brands of micellar water? Which is your favorite?

The Sephora brand cleansing water is more readily available in the US as well as being more affordable. Ive been using it for a couple months and I really like it so far. Could you maybe try it out and compare it to these two?
ReplyDeleteYeah that one is on my list actually! I'll try it and compare on here :)
DeleteI have used it for the past few months and I really don't think you'll like it. It has a chemically smell and it dries out my skin. I have very oily skin but its hydrated and the sephora brand really unbalanced it.
Deleteooh that's not good... that makes me wary to try it
DeleteJust wanted to say: don't use it if you have sensitive eyes like I do as well. Bioderma "stinging" is NOTHING against the one from Sephora - that burned so badly that I had to throw it away. I was not girl on fire but had eyes on fired :(
Deletewow... okay, I'm scratching this one from my list! Thank you for all your reviews!
DeleteI used the one from Sephora and you won't like it if you like Bioderma, it leaves kind of a sticky feeling in you skin plus it dries it and smells horrible! x
DeleteI'm sorry you won't be trying it... I guess I liked it because I have combination skin and the only other micellar water I've tried is the Bioderma Sébium H2O, which is like Sensibio but for combination-oily skin.
DeleteFrom what I see on the Bioderma website maybe you could try Hydrabio, which is targeted at dry sensitive skin (http://www.bioderma.com/en/nc/the-products/what-s-new/category/77.html)

DeleteNice post. Try L'oreal Micellar Water, when it comes to US. x
ReplyDeleteI do like it however it does not get the job done as good as Bioderma. Everyone in Europe thought it was a great dupe but I wasn't satisfied at all as I was waking up looking like a panda on a regular basis :(
DeleteI've been recently using the Dior Instant Cleansing Water and I love it! I will say that I've only been using it on my eyes though. It doesn't make my eyes sting, which is why I think I love it so much. The only downside is that it's 6.6 oz for $36.00. I've been wanting to try the Bioderma one. I've heard so many rave about it :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried the other but Bioderma is sold in chain drugstore in Canada called Shoppers Drugstore. Price is about comparable to what you said.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with this being a great convenience cleanser, but I also like to use it as part of a 2 or 3 step cleansing process at night unless I'm being lazy. I do like it in the morning though, as it gets off any residue from sleeping and feels really refreshing even though I keep it at room temperature. Love that!

Have you tried the Caudalie cleansing water? Is it the same sort or product as Bioderma? I've been meaning to try both Caudalie and Bioderma, although I am hesitant to try Bioderma because I've heard that it does break some people out (as you've said.) By the way, I am a devoted Pevonia fan because of you! I purchased the entire Myoxy Caviar line after watching your videos about a year ago, and it has changed my skin completely!
ReplyDeletePevonia is so incredible! I haven't tried the Caudalie one but it's on my to-try list. Bioderma won't break you out if you use it before your pevonia though! Just if you use it on it's own and your skin is sensitive.
DeleteI was on a challenge where i tried the caudalie, dior, nuxe, avene and bioderma- all the rest were a bit crap apart from bioderma! Glad to see it worked for you :)
ReplyDeleteReally wanna try this works now!

i use the Guinot instant Cleansing water (from a French manufacturer, not an American one, idk if there's a difference and ps. i do live in the states) and it works wonderfully!! i also use it as a first step in my night time routine. I have used it on my eyes, it doesnt sting and does and good job, however i just like the luxury of removing my eye makeup separately, makes me feel like my lashes are receiving extra love lol

ReplyDeleteI have never tried Bioderma and really would love to try one. Elle, can you do an updated Pevonia skin care products you're still using on this blog? I'm interested to try one or two products from the brand. I have oily to combination acne prone skin.

Actually, you can buy Bioderma in pretty much any chemist´s here in Slovakia!
ReplyDelete:) je to az niekedy fakt otravne
DeleteI'm so glad Bioderma is easily available in United Arab Emirates at any pharmacy. I've been using the red one for a while now and I love it. Although, I don't like the fragrance of the green one.
ReplyDeleteI've also heard that the boots cleansing water is a good dupe for bioderma. Haven't tried it though.
I have wanted to try bioderma for ages, but it always seems to far out of my price range.

I want to try Bioderma so badly! Maybe I will now. Lovely post elle, like always!

I love Caudalie Cleansing Water. It was the only one easily accessible to me at my local Sephora. I think it is only available online now though. It's been a staple in my beauty routine for a year or so now! The next one I'm excited to try is my best friend's favorite by Koh Gen Do. She's got great taste so I have high hopes for it! Here are some links if you want to check them out:

ReplyDeleteI have sensitive skin that's prone to breakouts when it's irritated, so I've never used only a cleansing water at night. I've only used it as a makeup remover, not a one stop shop. But on that note, I received a deluxe sample of the YSL cleansing water from Sephora almost 2 years ago, and unfortunately was only able to use about half of it before airport security threw it away for some unknown reason (it was under 3 oz!). Looking at the price (if I remember correctly, it was around the $40 range), it is much more expensive than Bioderma, but it was really great at removing makeup, had no smell, wasn't stripping, and didn't sting my eyes AT ALL. I recently tried the Caudalie one after using a makeup removing wipe, even when I thought all of my makeup was gone, the Caudalie cleansing water picked up some more! So it's a good product to get a really thorough makeup removal, but I haven't used this around my eyes yet, because multiple Caudalie products have irritated my skin before, so I'm hesitant to use it on that delicate area.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try the Bioderma one day!

,,it is not available outside of France,, what?? I live in Slovakia (central Europe) and we have Bioderma in every apothecary. It has huge media campaign here which is really annoying sometimes. I think that Bioderma is not so good lately, I prefer La Roche posay products
ReplyDeleteAlso loving Rodial Dragon´s Blood line. It is amazing
ReplyDeleteBioderma is not only available in France, in Poland you can get it pretty much everywhere! But it still is a bit pricey...

I'm a huge Bioderma fan! I bought the 500 mL bottle back in January and it's STILL not through! I would like to try the This Works water, but it's hard to find in the US and I would really like it to remove my eye makeup *read: mascara*. I loved this comparison, Elle!

I recently bought Bioderma while I was studying abroad in Italy this summer and so far, what I've used, I've really liked. I have super sensitive skin, especially around my eye area, so for me anything that I can use to take off my makeup without killing my eyes is a win for me!

I have a review on Bioderma's too! :) there are a few differences :)... hope you read it and like it :D

My skin is strange in that it is only sensitive WHEN I wash it. I rarely wear foundation but do use MAC MSF on a daily basis. Bioderma is the only product that I can use to remove makeup without irritating my skin. I wonder if it keeps my skin naturally balanced. Thankfully Bioderma is readily accessible within Canada and even goes on sale! ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! could you try the l'oreal new makeup remover, it is supposed to be a dupe for Bioderma!

I feel like a cleansing water is a must-try, after hearing you and Ingrid both rave about it for months now! Haha. I've been wanting to try the Bioderma, but I think I'll try a dupe first, that can be returned if it breaks me out. Haha the first picture totally made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteI have heard of this product (because of Bioderma being so popular) but have never tried it or any of its variations. It sounds worth checking out! http://dreamliveandrepeat.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteIf you try the cleansing water by the Sephora brand, you should try the small size. This cleansing water have a strong sent and irritate my dry and sensitive skin. I end up throwing it away!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Elle! I love that you opened with a little scientific fact :) I've tried the Sephora, Dior, YSL and Caudalie cleansing waters. I liked the Dior the most. It did a good job of getting makeup off the top layer of my skin but I could still tell/feel I had makeup still deep in my pores. Like you said though, doesn't replace actually washing your face but is great to help transition through looks or when you're too tired! I really want to give the Bioderma a shot now after reading your review!

There is a Boots one that is really good too! I bought it at Target and think it works great! You should give that one a try as well!

I've heard awesome things about the Boots one, sold at Target. I think I'm going to try it before I go for Bioderma, as it's really inexpensive and if it doesn't work I won't regret spending a few dollars.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review, Elle! I'm REALLY loving both of your new vlogs! <3

I have been loving your post Elle! They are so detailed & are really informational! My new fav blog <3

Sorry Elle, but Bioderma is availiable at our drugstores here in Canada. Anyway I do not like the Bioderma cleansing water. I found it was greasy feeling on my skin, after use it broke me out and caused redness and dry patches on my face. I have used it on makeup clients for a quick swap of their look, it left their makeup looking greasy and application process of the new makeup after removal was disgusting. A lot of people are in love with this brand but I much rather stick to using my favourite makeup remover called Face Off by a Canadian Brand called Vasanti followed by washing my face with a cleanser.

I've been trying the Loreal Micellar Water for a month or so, it's a really good product and it's cheap too. Don't know if it is available in the US yet, but I can find it easily here in Sweden. So hopefully you can find it in your country soon as well! :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get my hands on a cleansing water!! I just wish they were more avaiable in stores (in the USA). I have seen in a few hauls from overseas with the Loreal version - now that would be ideal!

Bioderma is available in Canada. And I LOVE that stuff. The other micellar solutions I've used is Caudaulie's and Clarins. Both work pretty similar.
ReplyDeleteBioderma has been reviewed soo soooo so many times on blogs and on YouTube videos, it's amazing! Thank you so much for all of the details though. It's nice to know that there is another option besides Bioderma out there. How nice of Fleur to send it to you!!
ReplyDeleteI wish it were more readily available in the US!

Hey Elle!
ReplyDeleteBioderma (and many french exclusive brands) are sold in Quebec (a Canadian province) due to the fact that Quebec is a french province!
We have Bioderma (sold in Pharmaprix, which is Shoppers Drug Mart in other provinces), Yves Rocher, Vichy, etc.
For your information, Montreal (biggest city of the province) is only a short trip from New York City and Boston :)
Je m'en allais écrire un commentaire très similaire hihi!
DeleteParfait :)
DeleteI hear that L'Oreal has come out with a cleansing water similar to this. It really seems like a lot of brands are trying their hand with micellar waters. It's almost as if it's following in the footsteps of the BB Cream trend!
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to try one of these as well. I think Bioderma would be nice to incorporate into my routine, but I haven't been wearing a lot of makeup lately so I don't need to do too much makeup removing before bed. When I am wearing foundation, however, I put a little extra virgin olive oil on a cotton pad and remove my makeup that way, washing my face with a gentle cleanser after. It leaves my skin with a nice, healthy glow that lingers into the next day! It's really nice because I'm using a lot of acne medication so my skin is super dry and it gives a nice moisturizing boost!
Great post, Elle! I look forward to you trying out others!
Em from Mascara Warrior blog
I still haven't tried Bioderma.. And I need too! :L
ReplyDeleteletitiaharriet.blogspot.com
I have been using the La Roche Posey one and it is really nice. Does need a little work to get mascara/eyeliner off but it feels very nice and refreshing on the skin and it is £11.50 for 200ml which isn't terrible.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried any cleansing waters... sad, I know! I will definitely have to give Bioderma a go, though. I'm a fan of double-cleansing so this might be a good first step! xx
ReplyDeleteBioderma is so easy to get in Canada! I use the pink one for dry/sensitive skin even though I have oily skin and I actually think it helped my skin clear up if anyone has acne prone, oily skin and was wondering. :D
ReplyDeleteI love micellar water and my favorite is from Vichy, no bitter taste left onthe lips and you can easily get it at ulta or walgreens $17 for 200ml
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try micellar water, it's an interesting concept!

great blog post elle! Like always xo kelseysarah002
ReplyDeleteI've been using cleansing waters for about 6 years. I started using the Dior one and then the Lancome one. Both were very similar and very nice. Then I bought Bioderma about a year ago after hearing so much about it and it's very comparable. It doesn't feel as luxurious as the Dior and Lancome ones and I feel like it doesn't do quite as good a job, but it works out cheaper so I continue to purchase it.
ReplyDeleteI recently bought the Loreal one (I don't think it's available in the US yet) and I find this to be very good. It stung my eyes a little at first but I think that was because I had a cold because it hasn't done it since. You should definitely try it when it is released in the US because it's really cheap and works just as well. I would say if you are looking to treat yourself then go with the Dior or Lancome.
Loved this blog post Elle :)
Hey Elle,
ReplyDeleteyou have to try the L'Oreal product its very good!!!

Enjoyed reading your blog and the threads Elle, thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI picked up just a 100ml bottle in Paris which was under 5euros to see would it be good for me (very oily skin, could fry an egg on my forehead ! ) and I was blown away on how good it was. Gutted as it's not sold here in Ireland but seeing other people commenting on how good the boots one is, I think I'll try that one next. Thanks Peeps :)
Wow, I never thought Bioderma was so expensive outside of France ! I personally live in Paris, and I get my 500mL bottle for 8 to 11 euros (10 to 14 USD, something like that). I seldom use the Crealine version, I have oily acne prone skin (but not that much acne lately), but I use the Sébium H2O micellar water (which is NOT a makeup remover ladies/gentlemen !!!) after I remove my makeup (when I rarely put some).
ReplyDeleteBut hey, in France makeup is super expensive compared to US and there are no deals (mascaras are like 14 USD, the maybelline infallible eyeshadows are also as expensive...)
Did you try the Créaline H2O TS or the Créaline H2O AR ?
xoxo

ReplyDeleteElle, how does Bioderma compare to CVS Eye Makeup Remover? I use the Neutrogena eye makeup remover which is what the CVS stuff is supposed to be based off of. I'm just wondering if Bioderma is worth it!
ReplyDeleteLove this post! I want to try the new L'Oreal version I've seen mentioned, but like the Bioderma I don't think it's available here in the US! Hopefully it will be soon, because I love using micellar water to remove my makeup, Bioderma is definitely the best.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how everybody says Bioderma this, Bioderma that, like it's an actual product's name - Bioderma is a company which has tens of lines (Sensibio, Hydrabio, Sebium, high SPF etc.)and many products within each line.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's sold not just in France, we have it in Poland in almost every pharmacy, big or small. One good thing about living in Poland is a huge variety of French skincare products :D
I have tried the Caudalie cleansing water and it feels like an absolute treat on my skin (I have normal skin, sometimes dry, sometimes oily in T zone.. depending) anyhow, I feel like it effectively removes my makeup and leaves my skin feeling clean. However it does not remove my eye make-up very well and I don't even use waterproof! It didn't sting or irritate my eye area, which tends to be sensitive, but it just wasn't effective. I would like to find one product to do the whole job!
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of lucky if I understand that BIODERMA is available in quebec !!!
ReplyDeleteBioderma is not sold only in France , i'm Moroccan and it's sold in pharmacies and everywhere in Morocco

Hey. Bioderma is avaible in pharmacies from Romania.
ReplyDeleteYou should really give the cleansing water from Vichy a try, I think it's like $21 or $25, but you can get it at like CVS and some Walgreens. I've used both Bioderma and Vichy and they are very comparable!
ReplyDeleteBioderma is now available in the UK at www.garden.co.uk/bioderma
ReplyDeleteThey also stock all the best french brands such as La Roche Posay, Vichy , Avene, Caudalie, NUxe - the list is endless
After viewing your useful post, I thought I should also give a try to Bioderma .
