3 weeks ago I wandered into a Space NK with only one thing on my mind: skincare. After devouring the whole of Caroline Hirons blog in a matter of days I had a much better understanding of the various peels and toners out there, and I wanted to go “get me some”. I asked the sales clerk (who was super sweet and helpful) to pick me out a peel, to which she exclaimed, “Cane & Austin! You have to try it. Everyone uses it!” I purchased the Cane & Austin Retexturizing Treatment Pads pretty blindly, with no idea if they were any good, and asked for a sample of the Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask, which was what I had intended to purchase. She gave me three generously sized samples of the Ren mask, promised me that I would like the Cane & Austin pads better, and sent me on my way. And… I’m in love. In LOVE. I need to tell you guys about these little sheets of wonder.
Basically, in a nutshell (a pistachio shell, I like those), these are at-home, one-step, daily-use glycolic acid peel pads. They promise to re-texturize the skin while helping to rebuild collagen, revealing a clearer, more radiant complexion. These pads contain 10% glycolic acid, which is made from natural sugar cane. According to my research (nerd alert), the “cane” in “Cane & Austin” refers to sugar care! Isn’t that kind of cool? It would be like naming your beauty product “Jelly Shot” (oh wait… that was me).
You are meant to use these twice a day, or once a day if you have sensitive skin. I use these once a day, at night, after my cleanser and before my serum and moisturizer. You don’t rinse it or wash it off; you just swipe it around your face and throw it away. I might eventually build up to using these twice a day, but for now I find that once nightly is all I need. The formula these pads are soaked in works to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and acne scarring (that’s the most important one for me!). As it dissolves dead skin cells, it stimulates the growth of new cells. These pads also have CoQ10, which is an antioxidant to hydrate and nourish, white witch hazel to tone, and vitamins A, C and E to protect against the environment.
The lady at Space NK warned that it might sting a tiny bit upon application, but that the feeling goes away quickly. For me, it did sting, but it was so minimal it was more of a “is that it?” I actually kept waiting for the “stinging” to kick in, but the tiny stinging in the beginning was it. Personally, I like the stinging, because it lets me know that the product is doing something. I am in love with these. I do not find them too harsh for my dry skin, and I do notice a difference after only using them a few weeks. My skin is smoother, less dull, and looks more hydrated, which I think is a combination of these pads and using lots of moisturizer. Overall, I think these pads are fantastic, and I will definitely be repurchasing them.
These pads are meant for all skin types, but if you are particularly acne prone they also make a pad especially for you called the Acne Treatment Pads. These work the same way as the retexturing pads, but they contain 5% glycolic acid and 2% salicylic acid. These two ingredients together, mixed with vitamins, antioxidants, and green tea help your skin fight those breakouts.
They also have the Retexturizing pads in individually wrapped packets, which will be perfect for travel! I am going to use some of my Space NK points to buy some. BTW, if you don’t have a Space NK rewards account, definitely sign up! It’s free, and basically gives you points for money spent, which you can use towards new products. You can sign up on their website or in their store. I have already scored enough points to buy me a new goodie! (Hello, individually wrapped pads, LOL!) Although, looking at the site I might end up splurging on another Cane & Austin product – others have caught my eye since this one was so good! I wouldn’t be surprised if the Retexturizing Moisture Cream came into my possession in the near future.

Great post -- glycolic acid is the "gold standard" for chemical exfoliation! And as many skin care enthusiasts know, exfoliation is the single most important therapeutic treatment you can do for your skin. For those who cannot afford the Cane+Austin pads or don't want to spend $60 on them, I would recommend they try the Glycolix Elite pads, which are about $25 for 60 pads (same amount of pads as C+A). You can get them from DermStore. They have 10%, 15%, and 20% concentrations. I have no relationship with that company (or any other). Just a tip.
ReplyDeletethanks for the suggestion! I might pick those up and compare them to see if they are as good! If so, that's a total bargain!
DeleteDefinitely check them out. The ingredients are almost exactly the same [the GE have witch hazel as a third ingredient (they also have witch hazel water like C+A)...that's the only difference]! :)
DeleteThanks Sylvii 25.00 is more to my liking for sure!
DeleteThese seem amazing! I'm so going to try these! :)
ReplyDeleteCan you do a blog post listing some of your favorite blogs to read? I want to get into reading blogs more and I saw you love to read your favorites in the morning. Please share :)
I'm planning on doing a post all about my favorite morning reads! Stay tuned :)
DeleteI love that you take the time to write the list of ingredients when you're talking about a product. It would also be interesting if you could sometimes talks about some of the ingredients and their function.
ReplyDeletethank you :)
These posts are great! You've been on of my inspirations for such a long time you inspired me to start my own blog. I can't believe you jumped on that train with us, so hey! Followed

ReplyDeleteI actually think the packaging looks super adorable, hahah! ♥

These sound so great almost like a dream, but for me I cannot spend anywhere near $60 on them! I will stick to my cleanser, exfoliator, and toner routine until I win the lottery!
ReplyDeletea reader posted a comment above and said that the Glycolix Elite pads from Dermstore are $25 for 60 pads!
DeleteWhat is the difference between this and Ren Radiance Mask? The REN Mask is on my skincare wishlist, but I don't know what these pads would do for my dry and acne scarred skin specifically - does it help lighten scars, even out skin? I have redness around my cheeks.
ReplyDeletehonestly, the Ren mask isn't my favorite. I am going to try it once more (tonight, actually) and then I am going to do a review post on them, but as of now I won't be purchasing it in full size. The pads help even out skin, lighten discoloration, and exfoliate.
DeleteGreat review! Very helpful. I love to read your blogs and watch your YouTube videos :) Shine on, Elle
ReplyDeleteawesome post, Elle! I think I want to try them out. And I like the idea of not having to wash it off, makes it more convenient!

I have never heard of this brand! thanks for introducing me to it. I have acne prone skin with some scaring and some hyperpigmentation. I have yet to find a product (or combination of products) that will do something to address all these issues. Love your new blog and congrats on the success.

better than the ren mask? wow, i need to give this a shot! it sound an awful lot like the alpha-h liquid gold though, have you tried it (and are they similar)? xo
ReplyDeletehttp://cloudsandcuticleoil.blogspot.co.uk/
I haven't tried that but it is on my list! But I think the difference is that liquid gold is a lot stronger, and you have to use it only a few times a week, whereas these you can use up to twice a day
DeleteHi Elle, I was wondering if you had any product recommendations for very dry, eczema, sensitive skin?
ReplyDeleteI have tried so many products, but none of them seem to help or fix the problems.
When I use foundation and concealer, my whole face looks like a cakey mess.
So I was wondering if you knew any good drugstore products, like moisturizer, that would be good for my skin type.
Thank You!
~Cindy F.
Hi Cindy! I have very dry eczema skin too. My favorite drugstore moisturizer is the curél daily moisture which can be used on the body and face. It does not burn my skin when I have flare-ups and is super moisturizing! Hope this helps! -Jessica
DeleteThanks Jessica, for the recommendation. I will definitely look into the product!

Sounds like a great product!

Menthol and Acetone!!! Yikes, those are some very harsh ingredients to put on your face.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, especially acetone is harsh. It's actually dimethyl ketone, it's the chemical substance that removes your nailpolish. It causes allergies and it's extremely skin disturbing. Though it's only mentioned among the last ingridients which means it only contains a small amount I would not put it on my skin. (I have same skin type as you Elle) And I know what I'm talking about, I'm a professional cosmetician and my mother is a dermatologist. If you like this product feel free to use it, but be careful and please note that Acetone (especially combined with menthol) is a hundred times worse than parabens.

Awesome product- I'll have to add it to the never-ending list of products I need to try! :)

These pads look like a great facial treatment, I have sensitive/dry skin like you, and am always extra careful with what I put on my face. I also like that these help with acne scarring!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I am so happy I stumbled upon this post! My biggest concern is getting rid of acne scarring too, I don't have a ton, but the little I do have keeps me from otherwise feeling totally comfortable without makeup on. At 23 I definitely want to start preventing wrinkles, so that works for this too! Thanks!

ReplyDeleteSo, I've ordered the Cane and Austin pads twice from Dermstore and both times, the product leaked all over the packaging. Has anyone else had this problem?!
ReplyDeleteThese look awesome!!! I need to try the acne ones because they sound perfect for me. Thanks for sharing!

This post is stressing me out in a good way!!! I currently use the Kate Sommervile Clinic-To-Go Resurfacing Peel Pads (16 pads for $48 USD). And, now I need these pads in my life to compare them!! Has anyone tried both?
ReplyDeleteDo you use these pads instead of the Alpha H liquid gold? How would you say they compare?
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you and your amazing blog. You are my go-to beauty mentor. If I want to find an amazing product, I can always count on you. Once I use up my Mario Badeschu glycolic toner (only 2%), I will certainly be buying these glycolic pads. I love getting glycolic peels, so anything you can do at home is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI tried these because of this post and I am so in l love!! Have you tried anything else from the Cane & Austin line yet?
