The Weekend Edit: New Products I’m Testing

I’m going to eventually have Dreaming in Blush on a Monday-Friday posting schedule, but I know that there will be weekends where I want to post something right then and not wait until Monday. Enter, The Weekend Edit.

As I was going through my “getting ready” process today I noticed that I am using a slew of new products that I have not talked about on YouTube yet (or this blog, since it is brand new). These are all new additions to my collection, and I haven’t used any of them enough to give them a dedicated review post, but I wanted to share my initial thoughts.

First up is my favorite (so far!) of this bunch, the S Factor Smoothing Lusterizer. This is a defrizzing product meant to leave your hair silky and shiny. Plus, it is supposed to reduce drying time, thus reducing the amount of heat your hair is exposed to.  I use about a 3-pea size amount in my damp hair, and then another pea size amount to the ends of my hair after it is dry. I love this stuff. It has tiny little glitters in it, which leaves your hair super shiny. Plus, it smells delicious – like fruity candy. I can’t stop smelling my hair after using this stuff! I’ve actually been using this whole line on my hair and I couldn’t be happier with it; I will probably do an entire post on this line this week.

I was recently sent the Rosa Arctica Eye* from a lovely PR girl from Kiehls, which is a Youth Regenerating Eye Balm with Rare “Resurrection Flower”. According to their site, the idea behind the Resurrection Flower is that it is able to survive up to 31 months in a dry-out cycle, by falling into antibiosis. When proper moisture conditions are restored it comes back to life without hours (like magic!). On the skin, it works to jolt the cells, stimulating skin’s own collagen and elastin production. This might sound a bit gimmicky, but I like the idea behind it. I actually think of little collagen flowers blooming under my eyes as I apply this. This eye cream also has white birch extract, which is a sugar ingredient known for its ability to boost hydration to the skin, and cocoa and shea butters for nourishment. Plus, it has Squalane, a Kiehl’s signature ingredient, which is easily absorbed in the skin and helps restore skin’s natural moisture balance. The texture is a balm, similar to chapstick, and feels luxurious under your eyes. I'll admit, it took me a bit to get used to the texture as it is different than your typical cream or gel, but I like it. I also think this would be great paired with another eye cream, like the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

Kiehl’s is currently having their Friend’s and Family sale right now for 20% off your entire purchase with coupon code “FAMILY”. This ends on June 17th. I’m personally going to pick up the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado and the Crème de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Whipped Body Butter. If you guys have any other Kiehl’s must-haves let me know in a comment! I am new to the brand and with the sale going on I want to try a few things out!

I’ve been using two Kate Somerville products recently: the HydraKate Line Release Face Serum and the Deep Tissue Repair Cream with Peptide K8. I love using these, as they feel absolutely lush on my skin, but they are very expensive. They both are meant to work really well at hydrating your skin and being anti-aging, so once I use these more I will do a more in-depth review. Plus, the serum has my love, Hyaluronic acid! P.S. I have to do a review of the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream – it’s love in a little purple jar!

Last we have the newest addition to my little skincare family, the Ren Clearcalm 3 Clarifying Clay Cleanser. I purchased this after reading about it on Caroline Hirons blog, and I have loved it for the few times I have used it. It’s an antibacterial cleanser formulated to fight acne while helping to prevent future breakouts, and has antimicrobial properties. I purchased this for days where my skin is acting up, but it is super gentle on my dry skin and something I could use daily without it being too harsh. I will definitely need to use this more before giving it a proper review, but so far so good!

If you want me to do a dedicated review post on any of these items, let me know in a comment! I hope you enjoyed this Weekend Edit post :)

  2. Great posts - really informational! The Kiehls creamy eye cream with avocado is such a holy grail -- maybe I'll try the rosa one since it is on sale anyways.
Do you have any recommendations for body exfoliation/glowy skin tips? I know you have dry skin - and up until this year I've never needed to worry about it cause my skin maintained it's moisture but suddenly I have dry patches and I don't know what to do!

    1. I am dying to try the avocado one! That's why I'm gonna pick it up during the sale. Do you have a clarisonic? I actually use mine on my body now! It really helps exfoliate my skin. Plus I use a scrubby loofa everytime I shower to exfoliate as well. And then I slather myself with my new Laura Mercier body butter! :)

    2. The avocado one is great - super moisturizing, but I'm not sure if it has any anti-aging elements in it... O_o ... I can't even believe I've never thought to use my clarisonic on my face. I absolutely loved it when i first got it, but after my acne cleared up I felt it was too abrasive and only use it every now and then. Will definitely have to try it on my body! And that Laura Mercier body butter is totally on my wish list now...

    3. It does have anti-aging ingredients you guys! Avocado oil has lots of vitamins and fatty acids which really nourish your skin, and it has an extremely high concentration of Vitamin E which is one of the best antioxidants you can use on your skin. Antioxidants will protect your skin from premature aging caused by free radicals. This cream also has beta-carotene, which is another very powerful antioxidant. In addition to protecting your skin, antioxidants also boost collagen and elastin production, which is great for your under-eye area! Shea butter is another main ingredient and this has a lot of vitamin A, which is the precursor to retinol. Because of this shea butter is basically a natural, more gentle form of retinol, and it really helps to renew your skin. It also stimulates collagen and elastin production. Hope this helps!!

  25. Regarding your Mineral Oil questions (I really want you to read this..):
"Mineral Oils, the most comment emmolients used in synthetic products, can dry out the under layer of the skin so it loses its ability to moisturize itself and becomes dependent on moisture being constantly replaced from an external source. Mineral Oils and their derivatives are occlusive, clogging pores and making it difficult for your skin to breath. Over time, the oils turn rancid and start forming free radicals, whose effects in the skin are very harmful. Most commercial skin-care products contain silicones, plasticlike substances responsible for the smooth, rich textrure you can find in high-end moisturizers. Like Mineral Oils, silicones and other plasticizers form a layer like a coat of plastic on your skin, preventing it from taking in oxygen and interfering with its ability to expel toxins and absorbe nutrients. Hope that helps!

  26. Loving the new blog, Elle. It seems very 'you', and that's a very good thing! It's reminiscent of the allthatglitters21 blogspot which I adored back in the day. So excited to see you back blogging, and seeming so passionate about it too! I started watching you when I was in Hight School, and now it's four years later and I've come out of uni with a degree and I'm heading off into the big bad world. You got me through so many issues in my life, and you've always been able to make me forget my troubles. You're very much someone who inspires me and reminds me of all the little joys in life. Wishing you the best always from here in Australia,

    Ash

I love your videos and the way you think... Always seeking the bright side! anyways I am so off topic... I was wondering if you could do a video or blog on your breakfast and tips to eating and staying healthy... I have many high risks of getting illnesses or desieses like diabetes and so on. 39. Hi Elle,
I have been watching your youtube videos for about a year and absolutely love them! I was so bummed when I kept on trying to go to elleandblair.com and it wasn't working, but now I have this blog! I am going to be an incoming freshman in high school next year and am finally allowed to wear makeup. I already know that I want to look very natural but put together, but I do not know where to start with getting all of the makeup and tools. Can you please make a blog post or a video of an updated makeup starter kit with mostly drugstore products. I really trust your opinion of drugstore products since you can't really try them in stores. Thank you so much for doing what you do and you have helped me so much with your videos!:)

The only tip I can remember though was to line your lips with brown eyepencil and then highlight the upper lip with a dark red one. You showed it also. It looked kind of weird ;)

  47. Hi Elle!! I have been watching your videos for a while and now I am Loving your blog :D

For Kiehl's, DEFIANTLY go try out the OLIVE FRUIT OIL DEEPLY REPAIRATIVE HAIR PAK !!!
It is a hair mask or a deep conditioner that I have been using and loving it for over 4 years!!
It is for dry and damaged hair. I even use it as a daily conditioner when I feel like my hair need moisture after colouring.
Also, I have been loving their AMINO ACID SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER for 2 years, they smell so great and makes me happy!! I picked up the macadamia shampoo the other day just to try it, but gave it away after few try, because it is no where as good as my Kiehl's amino acid shampoo.

Oh, and I have used the avocado eye cream before, it is pretty good, but I think I love the La Mer EYE BALM INTENSE much much more. Expecially if you apply it using their little silver headed applier!!

Looking forward to your new posts!! :D

  48. I also have and LOVE Laura's Cream Brule bath and body line as well!!! My car steering wheel even smells llike it now because I apply the hand cream every time I go into my car in the morning!!

  52. Great to have you back, Elle :) I loved your Allthatglitters blog and was really sad when you stopped updating it. It was my guilty pleasure for lunch breaks at work.
I really enjoy your writing. Sadly, on the ElleandBlair website it seemed to never go through as it does on your personal blogs (much shorter and feels heavily directed towards a much younger audience). But here it's back, full on. Great! :)

  53. I Love the fact that you're doing this new blog! It's so great to have something to read when we're not able to listen, like a work break. I Love your writing and the products you review. I've been using the S-Factor Lusterizer since 6th grade and I'm a sophomore in college now. I know this is probably bad, but I've been using the same bottle. It lasts so long and doesn't lose it's power. It's also great that you don't have to use much to get the full effect, so it's great for budgetary reasons. When I purchased it, it was around $60 for the bottle at a salon! I think it's quite a bit more inexpensive now! I can't wait to read more, best wishes to you and your sister!
