In's and Out's, a ramble, and some deals

Today is one of those days where I just want to chat, write and read blogs. I used to do a series called “In's and Out's” on my old blog and many of you loved it, so I thought one of those would be perfect today. Pinecone is curled up next to me, having worn himself out by chasing one of my EOS lip balms around the floor, so while he sleeps I’ll have a little blog ramble:

In:
True Blood: I stopped watching season 5 halfway through (was it just me or did it feel like a filler season?) but with the new season starting I decided to play catch up, and I am hooked again. It’s such a weird show but I find it oddly comforting. Lafayette is by far my favorite character.

Chemical Exfoliants: Still loving my Cane & Austin pads. They make me feel like I’m giving my skin a treatment each and every night.

Puppies: I have major puppy fever. I want one! But, I probably won’t be getting one anytime soon. I want to make sure that I have enough time to completely devote a few months to potty training before I make that kind of commitment. Le sigh… maybe one day!

Living Alone: I was really unsure if I was going to like living alone but it turns out that I love it! It’s strange, but in some ways it has made me more outgoing and makes me get out of the house more – maybe because I have to in order to get any sort of human interaction. Plus, I love knowing everything will be exactly where I left it.

Big Brother: It starts tomorrow!! I am so excited, as this is one of my favorite shows! I’ve had it written down on my calendar for ages it seems. I cannot WAIT to start watching!

BLT's: Absolutely my weakness. Bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on toasted bread... *swoon*

Out:
Diet Coke (and all other sodas): I have given this up many times over the years, but I don’t think I have gone this long without a single sip of soda ever. It has been 20 days since I have had a sip, and they say it only takes 21 days to form or break a habit, so I think I might be very close to breaking my addiction. I’ll admit though, yesterday was really hard. I had major cravings all day long and nothing would quench it. But… I persevered! Just call me Bella Swan, whom eventually had that baby even though everyone wanted to get rid of it.

Being Unorganized: Ever since the move I have been SO disorganized. My new apartment just doesn’t have any organizational structure yet, and my old one was SO organized that in comparison I feel totally out of whack and stressed. I lose things all the time, I can never find something in a pinch, there’s STILL boxes that aren’t unpacked because I have no where to put things… moving is not fun, lol.

Ikea: I have such a long list of projects that I want to do to this apartment, and many of them involve bits and pieces from Ikea. But… there is a problem. Ikea stresses me out! I have never once been there where I haven’t left feeling totally overwhelmed and stressed out. It’s probably because they don’t have enough people working to help you when you need it, and there are so many options for things that most of the time you have questions!

The good thing is that I don’t have a lot of “out’s”! Moving on…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back when I started dreaming up this blog, and made it my New Year’s Resolution to start one, I actually came up with two ideas. I wanted to do this one, based on beauty with a sprinkle of fashion, but I also wanted to do a home décor/organizing/lifestyle blog. Now, most people end up combining everything that they want to blog about into one blog, but I have this strong sense that they should be kept separate. I feel that some days I want to read about beauty, fashion or anything else super frivolous and girly, and other days I want to read about more practical things, like DIY stuff, or organizing tips, or recipes, or healthy lifestyle tips. I don’t necessarily want to go to the same blogs on these different days. There is something about the “feel” of a blog that draws me to it, and as a Gemini I have two different main feelings on any given day. (I joke about the Gemini bit, as I don’t take it that seriously, but that IS the strong point about Gemini’s…)

Anyway, the point of that ramble is that I am thinking of launching a second blog that will be décor, organizing and food based. I have considered just branching out this blog to encompass all of those topics but for some reason I really want to keep them separate. Does that make any sense? Would you guys be interested in reading and following both?

Deals:
I was just going through my email and saw a deal for a free glittery Julep top coat for the 4th of July and I thought I’d share it. It’s eligible with any patriotic polish purchase, just enter code “FIREWORKS” at checkout :)

Speaking of, have any of you signed up for their Monthly Maven box? Do you like it? I like that you are able to see what they are going to send you and then decide whether you want to pay for the box or skip the month – that’s different than any other monthly box that I know of. Let me know if you have tried this... I am considering signing up!

One more deal, I saw in my email that Stila is having a 20% off sale.

Save 20% on your Stila Cosmetics order! Use Code: 20OFF. Use link provided and discount will automatically be added at checkout. Expires 7/12/13. Not valid on sale items.

I feel much better now that I have had a good old fashioned blog chat. Leave me a comment below telling me what you think about the second blog!

xoxo,
Elle

  6. I wonder if it is hard living in an apartment with a dog? That's probably a question for Blair, but I have a Golden and want to move out so badly! I would be in a condo/apartment so it kinda scares me. My dog has been able to just go in the backyard anytime he wants. Is it a lot harder having dogs in a building situation?

  9. I'm sipping on Diet Coke now. I think I prefer 2 blogs as opposed to one. I'm not a huge beauty person, but I'm more into lifestyle. So, I'd like to go to one blog without having to rummage through it in order to find posts that I would enjoy reading. Congrats on your kicking Diet Coke addiction!

  23. As a reader, although 2 blogs sounds redundant at first, I never find myself following blogs that have too many topics. It gets too hard to "search & find" for the topic posts I'm interested in at that moment. I find myself dropping them from my follow list because I'm just not into "everything". OVERLOAD!

So I think a second blog on your lifestyle stuff could be really great. People have second youtube channels for vlogs, why not a second blog? :)

P.S. I just ordered my first Maven box with the promo code FREEBOX. You try it out and only pay shipping (mine was $3.99). Haven't received it yet, I'll let you know. But I loved the "style" quiz that matches you to your style. I looked at them all and decided they got it perfectly right. Give it a Go!

  25. OMG!!! How did I not know Big Brother starts tomorrow?!!?! I need to set up my DVR!! I cannot get enough of that show...I even went to the taping of one of the results shows. So fun!! Julie Chen would get her makeup and hair touched up and then the cameras would turn on and every time she slightly moved her head, she looked like a robot since you could tell she had to have her hair/makeup perfect. Too funny!

My whole family actually watches that show together. Weird, I know. My mom loves it so much she bought the live feed haha.

Thanks for your amazing Youtube videos and this new blog. I love watching and reading about everything you post.

  27. I've been getting the Julep boxes for about 2 years now. I love, love, love them. Not only do you get to see what's in your box, but you can choose to try one of the other 'styles'. So basically you get 5 choices each month. And they send 2 polishes and one beauty/body product in most boxes, and the beauty/body things are great! I got a big bottle of pure oil from them that is amazing, I love their body butters, cuticle oils, scrubs, exfoliants... And you often get little freebies like lip balm (one of my all time favourites is the vanilla mint with SPF), nail or foot files, hair clips, etc. I think that if you love nail polish it is a wonderful box to get. And really reasonably priced, even in Canada.

  30. I love reading your blog! I have followed your videos on youtube and you are by far my favorite beauty guru.
P.S. I think there isn't an apostrophe because you have more than one 'in' and 'out' which makes it plural.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would also be very interested in a decor/organization style blog from you! I loved watching your apartment tour and organization videos on youtube, and I can imagine how many other great ideas and tips you have to write about!

My Ikea tip- Take a friend who: 1) has been to the location multiple times and knows where things are/the options they come in; 2) has a similar style to help you pick things out; and 3) will keep you focused on just what you went in for!
I also love Ikea (organizing and decorating on the cheap? Count me in!), but I do a lot of research before I ever step foot in the store. That way, I know exactly what I am looking for in the bigger items, and I have a budget in mind. I allow myself to pick up smaller items in moderation, as well. And I try to stick to the same location as often as possible so I don't get lost in the madness. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  32. IKEA is so stressful! And I always get in there thinking I'm going to find exactly what I need but then leave with none of the things I needed but a cute patterned rug, cute ice cube trays and a throw pillow. I didn't need any of these things....

And I'd say either or for the blog, either put it all together or make two- I'd certainly follow both. On my blog I put it all- life, recipes, beauty, DIY. I kinda like blogs like that because its everything. But you do whatever you'd like and however you'd like it organized! That's what makes blogs so perfect, they are so personal :-)

  33. Hi Elle!

I love this blog and if you had another one will read that one as well. You can put an icons on top of the page where it says "home, about me, contact, disclosure" you could add to that lifestyle/decor/organizing/food-recepies/etc or put them in one (lifestyle) and the new page will open up Just an idea. Here is one blog that I follow has this way, on top you can see "http://allsortsandanecdotes.blogspot.co.uk/".

If you really feel like making another blog I think you should, dreaminginlifestyle.com, dreaminginlife/dreamingindream =) what ever the name i'll deffinately will be reading every single day. As I prefer more lifestyle,...etc blogs than beauty but I still do read yours.

Good luck with thinking/making new blog! Can't wait for it!

P.S. sorry for long essay hehe =)

  34. I would definitely visit the other blog! Its right up my alley :)

A quick Ikea tip - research what they have online before you go into the store! That way you have a rough idea of what you like and what the price ranges are before you can get overwhelmed by all the options and the layout! I was able to help my boyfriend get a dresser in about an hour doing that (talk about a miracle!) :)

    Love this blog, Elle!

  40. I definitely hear you on the unorganized bit. I moved home from college recently and I still don't feel like I have everything under control! I had a certain place for all my stuff at school, and now I don't have any place for it with my stuff at home. And I can't put it into storage because I use most (if not all of) it...

Anyway, I love living alone too! I had a three-person suite to myself at college and loved it. It felt like my own little apartment! Now that I'm back at home for the summer, it's just not the same.

I'd still read both blogs if you do decide to go for it! Your blog is a great read that I actually enjoy keeping up with. :) I totally know what you mean about blogging. I wanted to start and keep up with a beauty blog for the longest time, so I went for it. Months later, still in love. And obsessed.

  43. I had a somewhat bad experience with Julep. I had tried to cancel my Maven account for money purposes. But, they kept sending them and I ended up paying around 40 more dollars then I was planning on. They, in my opinion, have very disappointing customer service. I hope this helps :)

FYI- this is my experience and I am not putting negative thoughts on Julep in any way. I love all of the products I've received.

  44. Yes Elle two blogs would be delightful! That is such a brilliant idea! I have noticed that when a blog has lifestyle, beauty and just everything it becomes so cluttered and hard to navigate. If you were to make 2 separate blogs I would definitely read both of them, since it will be more organized rather then just being all over the place. I am so glad that you have decided to make a blog! I love reading about beauty products and tips, but also about decor and lifestyle. You have such elegant style and taste that inspires me along with many others. The way you actually connect and interact with your viewers is truly admirable! Your hard work and efforts are greatly appreciated by us, your viewers and fans :) Keep it up!

  47. Hi Elle!
Just though I would stop by to share my experience with soda and diet coke in particular.
Just like you I used to be addicted, I was drinking so much Coke that I am pretty sure that I had Coke in my veins rather than blood ;) I knew it wasn't healthy but I couldn't help it until I lost a teeth! I was 20 at the time and ran to the dentist who explained me that acid sugary (even diet) drink ruin your teeth and damage your enamel. Ever since, I fully spotted all sodas and I've never been healthier :)
I know it is though to get rid of such an habit but it really pays off in the end!

I'm not a big fan of the formulation for Julep polishes, but $20 for at least 2 that normally retail for $14 each is a steal! I've also done the mystery boxes a few times, which is how my collection of Julep has just multiplied!

  56. the julep maven box is awesome! :D 2 polishes & a beauty/body product for less than $20 is reasonable - esp when normally (w/ no maven discount) the polishes are $14. so its like you're gettin a polish, another polish for over half off & a beauty/body product for free! you can choose to go with your maven style (im boho glam) or a different one (june box i went bombshell!) or even upgrade for $35 more & get the ENTIRE collection for the month! - 11 polishes & the extra beauty/body products they put in a different box. I did that for the may box that paid tribute to the jazz age (very great gatsby) & i got the 11 polishes, the lip scrub & the 2 lipstick packs (w/ 3 mini lipsticks in each) for a little more than $50 & it was valued for over $200. & of course you can choose to skip if none of the boxes suit your taste. plus as a maven, you can make purchases at a discounted price (the polishes are about $11), use the points you get each time you get a box or make purchases to "pay" for boxes or add ons & have access to their secret store where they sell polishes & sets at extremely discounted prices only for those who are mavens. at the moment im obsessed with nail polishes & nail art so i love the julep maven program & its great we can completely preview the collection for the month & choose what we want or don't. other subscription programs only offer you one choice & some things they give aren't what i want or they're dinky samples. so i say give it a go & you can always cancel of you don't like it anymore :)

I love the idea of two blogs, but I feel like I go to you for "everything girly" and so I wouldn't really need two different blogs. Do you ever find it hard to manage a facebook, twitter, 2 youtube channels, instagram, a blog, and your business? What's a day like for you work-wise?

I just made a blog post today about some of my experiences volunteering at an animal shelter, complete with pictures of some of the pups and kitties I helped out! That's very responsible of you, and your future doggy will be all the happier for it!

If you want to see my post/photo collection about helping at the animal rescue you can see it here: http://dilettantedeconstructed.com/2013/06/26/hello-my-name-is-katarina-and-im-an-animal-lover/

  67. I felt the same way about True Blood Season 5! It just wasn't as good, and I didn't finish it either. I did finish it up before Season 6 premiered and so far I think season 6 is going to be really good! And re: a second blog, I would definitely read it! I will probably be either moving or re-organizing my house now to make better use of the space, so I would love to see your ideas and tips!

  68. I Just started watching True Blood yesterday and am SO HOOKED. I am restraining my self to not watch all of it at once haha. And I agree with everyone else, I would totally read another blog by you! I feel the same way about being unorganized! I recently moved into a new apartment with 3 new room mates and I feel like I have no idea where half my stuff should belong!

  71. The Julep maven box is ok, I have been subscribed since february. Depends on your style profile but with mine i get two nail polishes and a full size beauty product. Then usually a small sample of a product although this month it was three different flavour of some candy. It's nice but I found I have so much nail now, since I had to painting my nails due to yellow staining. But their rock star hand cream is amazing!!! I may stop for a while so i actually use more than on of the polishes. And maybe I should stop buying nail polish every two weeks...

  72. It always cracks me up how much we have in common. I got to the part about BLT's, and it just so happens that they've been practically all I've eaten this past month. It's weird 'cause I hardly ever eat them, and it had been at least a year since my last one, then all of a sudden I got this craving and BAM, it's all I eat. ;P

  73. Just catching up with your blogs as have been moving home...oh joy!
I have no issue with reading all of the topics you're interested in in one blog, but if you feel that a second one would be best than just go with that.
I'll subscribe to that too. I'm in the UK so I'm not sure that it's the same, but I find the IKEA online help and customer service really useful and just use that to work out exactly what I want before I even go to the store. Than you can just pick up exactly what you need or order it on-line and collect from the store.

  74. Hey Elle!!
I recently read the Lauren Conrad beauty book and loved it! I had this random thought yesterday that you and Blair should totally make a book like that so you can share all of your beauty tips and favorites with us!!! I know this is really random but I would really enjoy to have something that I can reference when doing my makeup without having to search for videos, etc. Just a thought:)

  75. Hi Elle,

I don't think you should start another blog, I think you should add another tab on this site for decor etc.

  76. I have the Julep Maven box and I have had my subscription for almost a year now. Totally worth it! I LOVE it. They always send lots of extras. Like I got mine today and got two nail polishes, a body oil and face oil blotting pads. Most months I get three polishes and an extra. All the colors are BEAUTIFUL. There is only one that I didn't like :) You should go for it.

  79. I love Big Brother! There is not a Lush store in my town but I have heard about so many products I want to try! Diet Coke is my weakness and I am cutting it way down. GREAT BLOG :)

  80. I think it would be better to have them both linked, but separated. Like have them both be here in dreaminginblush, but separated by two tabs. Beauty, fashion, etc would be under one tab, and lifestyle, home decor, and recipes under another tab. I think that would be easier to keep up with for both you and your audience. :)
